Last week we covered techniques of thinning and pruning. Once that is complete, branches can be arranged to expose them to more sunlight, and making the appearance of the tree more organized.
After removing wires that were digging in:
After adding a couple guy-wires to lower some heavy branches:
Finish wiring the upper portions:
The apex will need to be replaced over the next few years to use smaller branches. Mather strangely-shaped shoot in the upper right was wired into that position so it wouldn’t jut out from the profile, but it is necessary to keep sap flowing for grafting later.
What’s next? in the spring, it will be moved into a shallower container, which will help show the base and movement. Grafting will be attempted in the upper portion of the trunk to provide some options for refinement.
